Mugs were a popular souvenir with sailors who traveled to China. The pottery shop in the port of call had mugs already fired and decorated, except for the flag on the ship. The sailors would pick out which flag they wanted; the flag would then be painted and the mug given a final firing. The sailor would come back to the shop in a day or two to pick up his finished souvenir.
