Born in Beijing, Bai was a self-taught artist. He spent most of his career as a teacher at Beijing Fine Arts Normal College and the Central College of Industrial Art. He traveled widely throughout China with his students, encouraging them to paint from nature. He received important official commissions in Beijing to paint large-scale paintings for the Great Hall of the People, The Diaoyutai State Guest House and large hotels such as the Beijing Hotel. His work has been widely exhibited in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States.
