1. Cannell and Chaffin was an art gallery and interior decoration firm in Los Angeles. Per the 1933 auction catalogue, Cannell and Chaffin imported the portraits from Europe. They may have been purchased by the dealer by 1921. The Los Angeles Times, September 25, 1921, referenced one(!) painting by van Veen at the recently updated gallery.
2. John Mitchell died on July 2, 1926; his widow died April 20, 1931. The Mitchells had no heirs.
3. Lenders to the California Pacific International Exposition. Palace of Fine Arts, Balboa Park, San Diego, California, February 12, 1936 - September 6, 1936. Exhibition label on verso.
4. After Captain Johnson’s (1890-1977) death the paintings remain in Mrs. Hazel W. Johnson's (1896-1980) possession. They were on loan to the San Diego Museum of Art from 1949-73.
