The medal was originated by the princes Heinrich XX, older line, and Heinrich LXII, younger line, of the Reuss princedom in 1849 as a commemorative medal for those officers and troops of the Reuss battalion, who took part in the battle of Eckernförde on April 5, 1849, during the revolt of the provinces Schleswig and Holstein against Denmark.
