In the foreground a placid river winds through small hillocks abounding in marsh grass. Beyond this dark foreground the marsh recedes toward the distant mountains and sky, which are bathed in a thin red glow of sunset. On the marshes themselves stand several of Heade's ubiquitous haystacks, and near the center of the canvas workers are loading hay onto a wagon.
This color photograph represents in shades of brown three trees standing above a dense canopy of foliage in the foreground. Beyond the canopy of foliage and trees is a valley, covered in fog.
