Grand Residence

Wu Guanzhong

1986

The son of a rural schoolteacher, Wu Guanzhong gave up his studies in electrical engineering to study painting. He trained in China and France. Strongly influenced by the post-Impressionists, Wu gradually accepted the ideals of formalism as the key to understanding the basic meaning of art. The Grand Residence is a classic study of positive and negative space, and it remains one of the artist’s favorite works.
