In this black and white, round-format print, the scene is dominated by a wooden armature surroudning the ribs of a ship that is under construction. Five figures work throughout the composition on building the ship--three on the ground and two on the portion of the armature at the back right of the composition. At the bottom of the print is a still life that includes tools related to ship building, including wood and woodworking implements.
"The model, Miss Walker, sits in profile at right, her foot resting on a stool. She holds a sheetof paper on her knee." (Breeskin, 1982, 45, no. 37).
This painting represents a cresting wave breaking on a shoreline. A boat rests in shallow water and sand just in front of the breaking wave. Many boats are visible scattered at sail, offshore. Just above the horizon is a brilliantly colored sunsest and a sky with scattered clouds.
