Oval black basalt medallion with relief portrait of a Francesco Albani (1578-1660) facing right. Italian painter who was born in Bologna. The son of a silk merchant who studied as a fellow pupil with Guido Reni first under Calvaert in Bologna, and then under the Carracci in Rome. He enjoyed a considerable reputation in seventeenth century Italy and his works are mainly preserved in Rome, Paris and Bologna.
