Fireworks at Ryogoku Bridge (Rogoku Hanabi), Edo Meisho series

Ando Hiroshige

Edo period (1615-1868), 1843-1846

Ryogoku Bridge is the oldest of the three main bridges that spanned the Sumida River in downtown Edo. It was a popular gathering spot for summer outings where people strolled along the riverbanks and enjoyed the many entertainments and food stalls that lined the way. One of the most popular attractions was the Sumo matches held in the spring and fall of each year. At the conclusion of the tournaments fireworks attracted large crowds as they lit up the night sky above the bridge.
