Documentary encaustic-decorated, two-handled, covered vase of black basalt, after the antique kantharos form, shield-shaped with upright strap handles, painted in red with on one side a bearded Jupiter seated with thyrsus (a staff or spear tipped with an ornament like a pine cone) and Ganymede standing with a komast (drinking) cup in the Greek red-figure style, the other side decorated with an elaborate foliate scroll cartouche and inscribed inside “W. M. Moseley 1788”, the flat cover with a broad cylindrical finial decorated with a border of acanthus leaves and geometric patterned bands.
