This etching is created with black ink on paper. The scene looks out over rooftops from a high vantage point toward a cityscape (downtown Birmingham, Alabama). Smoke rises intermittently in the distance, and the sky has some color and a few lines but is fairly clear.

Carver is seated on a stool, facing forward, looking off into the distance to his right past the viewer. He is wearing a dark gray jacket, light gray pants, a white shirt, and a black tie. He also wears a silver necklace and has two red and yellow flowers on his lapel. He holds a round-bottomed beaker with clear liquid in it, and to his left is a table with related scientific containers. Carver sits in front of an abstract background composed of vertical fields of black, white, and gray.
