Whistler enjoyed experimenting with different types of paper and the various results achieved. He collected old papers from a wide variety of sources, and even used these papers for his proofs. He particularly appreciated the warm sheen of thin Japanese paper and the way it absorbed ink. Whistler pulled one hundred impressions of this print on Japanese paper.
