A bright red house against a vivid blue sky. The windows and door have white mullions and the black panes denote darkness within the house. A black-and-white checkerboard patio occupies the foreground to the right, while purple irises grow in the extreme foreground at left.
In the center foreground, a man wearing a hat, red shirt, and blue trousers pushes a wheelbarrow loaded with hay and a pitchfork. The solitary figure walks along a path lined with grass and bushes. A stone wall is visible in the middleground, with tall, full deciduous trees populating the background behind the wall. Typical of Bannister's work, and Barbizon pictures in general, various shades of green and brown comprise the overall palette.
