Boating in a Pine Mountain Landscape

Bosai was one of the leading landscape artists of his day. Born and raised in Edo (Tokyo), he was a painter, printmaker, author and Confucian scholar. He is perhaps best remembered for a woodblock printed book of several of his paintings known as the Kyochuzan (Mountains of the Heart) published in 1816.

Kyōchūzan (Mountains of the Heart)

This is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful books published in the Edo period (1615-1868) due to the sensitive capture in woodblock print, by the block carver and the printer, of the distinctive brushwork and subtle coloring of Bosai’s paintings.
