Art in Conversation: Interpretations of Mississippian Iconography

/ Virtual Programs

This virtual talk explores the imagery and symbolism of Mississippian art and its relevance in ritual activities, cosmological vision, and ideology.

This discussion is led by F. Kent Reilly III, Ph.D Professor of Anthropology at Texas State University and Adjunct Anthropology Professor at the University of Alabama, and Eric Singleton, Ph.D., Curator of Ethnology for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, the co-curators of the BMA’s current exhibition, “Lost Realms of the Moundbuilders: Ancient Native Americans of the South and Midwest.”

Together they will discuss the layers of Mississippian culture and iconography within the exhibition, which is currently on view through Feb. 3, 2022 in our Jemison gallery.
