In the Community: Woodlawn Project

/ In the Community

Our team of BMA teaching artist instructors recently collaborated with Real Life Poets, Inc. to create a body of work with a talented group of Woodlawn High School students. Our art and poetry sessions included discussions and work inspired by current issues like gun violence, freedom of speech, and knowledge of self. We explored street art and how to safely make a statement in public. We also started a winter wonderland yarn bomb art installation, creating a nostalgic beauty in an abandoned Woodlawn playground. In a way, we brought back the joy that was once alive when the playground was in use.

Our Art Speaks Woodlawn Project was a pilot program. In the future, we plan to introduce similar programs in more schools throughout the Birmingham community
