Travel through time in America. Discover how works of art can teach us about the settlement of America, the westward expansion of our nation, and the impact of social and political upheaval on life in America. By looking closely at works of art, students will enhance their analytical thinking skills. The artworks included on this tour reflect styles, themes, and cultural values that exemplify the nation’s diversity through the years.
CROSSCURRENTS OF CULTURE
(Grades 5–12) Limit 60 students. 60 minutes.
Explore the style and decoration of various objects from African, American Indian, Chinese, and Japanese cultures. Discover what these elements can tell us about the function, tradition and meaning of artifacts from these cultures. Learn about rituals and customs that are shared across cultures.
EUROPEAN MASTERPIECES: THE GRAND TOUR
(Grades 3–12) Limit 75 students. 60 minutes.
Take the Grand Tour! During the eighteenth century, wealthy young gentlemen and young gentlewomen, along with chaperones and tutors, would embark on a long tour of continental Europe. The primary purpose of their travels was to gain a deeper understanding of the art and culture of various peoples and places. Join us for a Grand Tour adventure through the English, Italian and French and galleries to discover what travelers say and collected during their journeys.
FOLLOW THE MOCCASIN PATH: THE NATIVE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
(Grades K–12) Limit 45 students. 60 minutes.
Follow the Moccasin Path and walk in the steps of Native American art and culture. This tour examines objects from various Native American cultures and what they can tell us about the customs, values, and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of America. Explore art from the Eastern Woodlands, the Creeks, the Southwestern, the Plains, and the Northwest Coast Indians.
IMAGINASIA
(Grades 3–12) Limit 60 students. 60 minutes.
ImaginAsia provides an ideal opportunity for students to explore and appreciate Asian art and culture, and gain a greater multi-cultural understanding of the world and of world history. The ImaginAsia tour enhances students’ observation skills and descriptive language skills. Students practice careful observation while discussing and responding to diverse artworks. This close observation will generate questions and dialogue about exploring works of art.
BLACK HISTORY 365
Available through August 2013
(Grades K–adult) Limit 60 students or adults. 30 – 60 minutes (depending on grade of group).
The Birmingham Museum of Art features the work of Black artists year-round. Experience diverse forms of art created from a variety of perspectives. Reflect on the important accomplishments of black individuals worldwide. This tour includes careful examination of the Museum’s African collection and works by contemporary African-American or African artists. Visitors will explore the influence of Arfican art on modern and contemporary artists worldwide.
Discovering the BMA
(All grade levels) 60 minutes.
The Birmingham Museum of Art, one of the finest regional museums in the United States, houses a diverse collection of more than 25,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and decorative arts dating from ancient to modern times. The collection presents a rich panorama of cultures, featuring extensive holdings of Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American art.
