Kids and Families

Kids and their families have so much to explore at the BMA! Travel to faraway lands, make history come alive, and discover the world of art together in our galleries and family spaces. From family tours and art activities to cultural celebrations on special Family Days, there’s always something new to do. Make plans to visit during one of our many family programs, or stop by anytime for free fun in Bart’s ArtVenture and Bart’s Lair Under the Stairs.

Spring Break Activities!

The World in a Box!

Drop in anytime between 10AM – 5PM for our FREE art activities and family tours. Family tours about that day’s culture will be 10:30AM and 1:30PM.

Discover differences in cultures as you create a box inspired by a new collection every day. Explore the decorations and textures in Contemporary, Native American, Indian, and Wedgwood artworks.

World Cultures Celebrated:
Tuesday, March 25: Contemporary American
Wednesday, March 26: Native American
Thursday, March 27: Indian
Friday, March 28: 18th-Century English

Bart’s Art Cart: Color, color, color!

This drop-in art program for kids and families features a different theme from our galleries and art activity each month. Stop by to make art with Bart!

In March, we will create a colorful crown to announce the end of winter.

Museum Academy: Art Classes for Grades 6-9

Registration is now closed for Spring 2014. Please look at our summer offerings and check back soon for Fall 2014 listings.

The Museum Academy is a new and unique experience in Birmingham that provides students the opportunity to learn from working artists in the Museum’s studios and original artworks in the galleries. Teaching artists at the Academy reflect the diversity of art and techniques represented in the Museum.

Students emerge from the 12-week program with critical-thinking experience, discipline of practice, and a portfolio of original artwork that explores a variety of processes and media.

Join us for this new mentally stimulating, creative afterschool program and become pioneers of the Museum Academy!

$325 Museum members // $360 non-members

Spring 2014 Schedule:
Tuesdays 3:45–5:45PM, January 14 – April 8 (No class March 25)

Academy Apprentice: 6th–7th grades
Academy Assistant: 8th–9th grades
Academy Master: 10th–12th grades (coming fall 2014)

Youth Art Month Student Exhibition Closes

February 16 – March 16, 2014

Grades: K – 12

The Birmingham Museum of Art is proud to present its twenty-first Youth Art Month exhibition in March 2014. Youth Art Month was established to recognize the essential role of art in a balanced education. Artwork will be accepted for all grades. A reception to honor the students will be held at a time to be announced.

HOLI: A Celebration of COLOR!

Join us in Steiner Auditorium during our Holi Festival for an incredible line-up of local, professional, Indian dance and music performances. These performances are part of the larger Holi Festival, which lasts from 10AM-4PM. Click here to see what else is planned for the day!

Museum Studio For Families: Magical Mosaics

$40 Bart’s Kids Club Members ($50 non-members)
For ages 5+

Register early for this class that will fill up quickly! Explore color, shape and design in a mosaic class for the whole family. Let your creations dry while you celebrate more color at the Holi Festival!

First Thursdays: After Hours At BMA

Your Night at the Museum!

The Birmingham Museum of Art is pleased to present an after-hours experience on the first Thursday of each month. Wander the galleries, sip cocktails in the garden, listen to live music, catch a movie, or sit down with friends for tapas at Oscar’s. The Museum is open for your enjoyment until 9PM.
