Kids and Families

Kids and their families have so much to explore at the BMA! Travel to faraway lands, make history come alive, and discover the world of art together in our galleries and family spaces. From family tours and art activities to cultural celebrations on special Family Days, there’s always something new to do. Make plans to visit during one of our many family programs, or stop by anytime for free fun in Bart’s ArtVenture and Bart’s Lair Under the Stairs.

Bart’s Books: Something From Nothing

Bart’s Books is a storytelling program for children ages 4-7. Bart selects a new book and related work of art each month that he thinks kids will enjoy.

This month, Bart has selected Something from Nothing.

Bart’s Books is sponsored by Publix Super Market Charities.

Museum Academy: Art Classes for Grades 6-9

Registration is now closed for Spring 2014. Please look at our summer offerings and check back soon for Fall 2014 listings.

The Museum Academy is a new and unique experience in Birmingham that provides students the opportunity to learn from working artists in the Museum’s studios and original artworks in the galleries. Teaching artists at the Academy reflect the diversity of art and techniques represented in the Museum.

Students emerge from the 12-week program with critical-thinking experience, discipline of practice, and a portfolio of original artwork that explores a variety of processes and media.

Join us for this new mentally stimulating, creative afterschool program and become pioneers of the Museum Academy!

$325 Museum members // $360 non-members

Spring 2014 Schedule:
Tuesdays 3:45–5:45PM, January 14 – April 8 (No class March 25)

Academy Apprentice: 6th–7th grades
Academy Assistant: 8th–9th grades
Academy Master: 10th–12th grades (coming fall 2014)

First Thursdays: After Hours At BMA

Your Night at the Museum!

The Birmingham Museum of Art is pleased to present an after-hours experience on the first Thursday of each month. Wander the galleries, sip cocktails in the garden, catch a movie, or sit down with friends for tapas at Oscar’s. The Museum is open for your enjoyment until 9PM.

Experience the bold and daring art of Delacroix with our themed night of Delacroix and the Exotic.

Birmingham Fashion Week: Rising Design Star Challenge Opens

The Museum is partnering with Birmingham Fashion Week to present an exhibition of fashion designs from students in grades 6 through 12. Birmingham Fashion Week was founded on the ideals of bringing unity to our community through fashion. Local and national designers, alongside local and national boutiques, and the Birmingham Museum of Art will gather together to promote and inspire our rising stars. Models, make-up artists, and hair stylists will showcase their talents on the runway, while encouraging locals and visitors to explore the creative talents of Birmingham.

ArtBreak: Around the World with Bart: Spring Break Family Tour

Feed your body and mind at noon every Tuesday. Join us for a 20-30 minute gallery talk. Stay for lunch at Oscar’s Café and they will throw in a free dessert!
Today’s ArtBreak is presented by the BMA’s Assistant Curator of Education for Family Programs Madeline Adams, who will give a family tour during the BMA’s Spring Break programming.
