Art, performances, sake tasting, contemporary dance, and Japanese street fashion: you can expect this and much more during our 10th season of Art on the Rocks, presented by Dale’s Seasoning. Drawing inspiration from our summer exhibition, Lethal Beauty: Samurai Weapons and Armor, the Museum will be buzzing with creativity, showcasing the talents of emerging artists, musicians, chefs, animators, fashionistas, dreamers, and performers. Experience the best of Birmingham as we celebrate Japanese culture, the return of summer, and 10 memorable years of #ArtOnTheRocks

Celebrate Japanese culture with the Museum as we welcome our newest exhibition, Lethal Beauty: Samurai Weapons and Armor. Art On The Rocks is the perfect time to see Lethal Beauty, where you can visit the exhibition through the night for free (included with Art On The Rocks admission).

Live Music: Matrimony

This Charlotte, North Carolina-based band was recently named one of Rolling Stone‘s top 10 new artists you need to know.  Comprised of husband and wife duo Jimmy Brown and Ashlee Hardee Brown, along with her brothers Jordan and C.J., this harmonizing family band has a sound that is born of true love and a shared lifetime.

Watch Your Mouth!

8:15PM, 8:45PM, 9:15PM, and 9:45PM // European Galleries
Michael Harriot, Orron Kenyetta, and performers from Birmingham and beyond present the first ever “exhibit” of spoken word. Poets, comedians, storytellers, musicians, and hip hop artists highlight and examine the broad diaspora of oral communication as art.

Hipster Haiku

ALL NIGHT // Third Floor, near Asian Galleries
A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Often focusing on images from nature, haiku emphasizes simplicity, intensity, and directness of expression. Type your own haiku on one of our vintage typewriters, and share it using #BMASamurai!

Light Painting Photo Booth

7:30-8:30PM & 9:30-10:30PM // Contemporary Gallery
The Light Paint Photo Booth is an incredible new spin on the classic photo booth. Guests are guided into a pitch black enclosure by an attendant who explains the unique light painting process. The photo countdown begins and guests pose for the camera’s flash to go off. Right after the flash, the shutter on the camera remains open for an additional 15 seconds while the guests move around with LED and glow props creating colored light trails.

MAKEbhm Giant Jenga

ALL NIGHT // Upper Plaza
MAKEbhm is a community space, celebrating the passion to create. Executive Director Bruce Lanier has had the amazing idea to create a giant Jenga set out of sturdy, lightweight material. During Art On The Rocks, players can take their Jenga game to new heights – how high will the blocks go before they come tumbling down? Fun for all ages!

Seasick Records

ALL NIGHT // Oscar’s Café
Seasick Records, located in Avondale, houses a variety of indie/alternative, punk, hardcore, and classic rock vinyl, CDs, and cassettes. Complete with a music savvy staff devoted to introducing the newest and the best releases, Seasick has a bright future ahead in the Magic City.

Pastry Art Edible Installation

ALL NIGHT // Main Lobby
A passion for art and baking has carried Carol Gregg on a fifteen-year culinary odyssey that led from a hobby to a profession. Carol, along with her husband, Dennis, opened Pastry Art Bake Shoppe in Homewood, Alabama where her award-winning “scratch” cake creations are featured. The Greggs’ founding principle of freshness, quality, and friendliness is evident any day you visit one of their cozy little bakeries. See their work of art, inspired by a piece in our collection, made out of delicious baby bites!

8:30PM // Sake Production: Sakura Masamune & Sake Production: Nechi Otokoyama
Find out how this national drink, traditionally used at celebrations, is now being enjoyed across the globe. Check out these Discovery Channel clips, which uncover the secrets of some of Japan’s most famous Sake brewers. You will learn about the rice, water, climate, and customs that make each Sake so distinctive. Also, Junior Patrons will enjoy sake cocktails from the talented mixologist Steva Casey. Southern Femme & Saks Fifth Avenue Present A Japanese-Inspired Fashion Show

Enjoy a Japanese fashion show inspired by Lethal Beauty. From traditional kimonos of the Geishas to today’s runway looks, these Japanese-inspired fashions are sure to transport you far from Birmingham!  The show, produced by Southern Femme, will be accompanied by traditional Japanese musicians and DJ Coco.

Live Music: The Kopecky Family Band

10PM // Upper Terrace
The Kopecky Family Band – a non-traditional family, at that – is dynamic, and they wield an equally dynamic slew of instruments. Their thoughtful songwriting is supported by a diverse backdrop of sound. Their musical canvas is covered with broad brushstrokes, including clanging tambourines and guitars, booming percussion, intelligent string instruments, and triumphant horns. These six bandmates swap their musical tools without a second thought, creating an emotive, adventurous, and energetic environment onstage.

DJ Coco

ALL NIGHT // Oscar’s Café
DJ Coco has been moving dance floors all over the world for well over a decade. Having played in some of the hippest bars and clubs, from London to Miami and Barcelona to Ibiza, DJ Coco has been a regular fixture at many of the Southeast’s largest events. This summer, he is celebrating the Art On The Rocks with a mix of Japanese pop culture music, setting the scene perfectly for all of our themed events.

The Art of Sake Cocktails

Demonstrations at 8:30 and 9:30PM
Mixologist Steva Casey takes you behind the bar and gives you an insider’s look into how sake can add depth and body to your cocktails. Learn about the varieties of sake that exist and how they can fit into any mixologists’ cocktail making repertoire. Under Steva’s guidance, guests will enjoy two exclusive sake cocktails and a recipe to try it at home!

Be a part of Brooklyn artist Amanda Browder’s upcoming Chromacity project, which will debut at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts and the Alys Stephens Center this summer.

What’s Old is New Again: Japanese Prints of the 20th Century

7:30PM & 8PM // Asian Galleries
Expand your knowledge and appreciation of Japanese art as the BMA’s Senior Curator and Curator of Asian Art Don Wood gives a talk on traditional woodblock prints from the first half of the 20th century. Two extraordinary Japanese artists, Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) and Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-195), will be discussed during this gallery talk.

The Dapper Man Pop-Up Shop, presented by Shaia’s and Southern Femme

Over the centuries, samurai warriors cultivated a respect for elegance and aesthetics in their suits of armor. With their flash, color, and exceptional design, these warriors were unlike any other in the world. Channel the samurai warriors’ appreciation for the finer things, and learn the art of dressing like a dapper man! Stylists from Shaia’s Menswear in Homewood and Southern Femme will share the secrets to looking your best! For even more fun, step into the “Dapper Man” photo booth for a chance to win some generous giveaways from Shaia’s!

DANCEe, the modern-contemporary company, is celebrated abroad and treasured by Birmingham. Ross’ new dance for Art On The Rocks blends aesthetics: the digital and the sensual, the sustained and the vibratory, the glorious and the busted movement qualities.  Come delight in, Trust, Rush, Receipts.
