Wedgwood has always made commemorative wares—pieces celebrating popular heroes or historical events. Usually these were produced in limited editions for sale on the open market. This mug commemorates Wedgwood’s bicentenary in 1959. It is decorated with traditional Wedgwood vases, the portrait medallions of Josiah Wedgwood, his wife Sarah, and Thomas Bentley, his partner from 1769 to 1780. It also includes the names of potteries associated with Josiah Wedgwood: Churchyard Works, Fenton Low, Ivy House, and Barlaston.
