Thomas Chippendale is the best-known English furniture maker and certainly the most influential. His furniture adorns some of the finest English houses. He is also the author of the first comprehensive book of furniture designs, “The Gentleman & Cabinet Maker’s Director,” which made Chippendale’s name a household word. Today, the term “Chippendale” is also used as an adjective to describe furniture characterized by flowing lines and rococo ornamentation.
