Voices in the Gallery: Ekphrastic Poetry Writing Workshop

Artist Instructor: Jeanie Thompson, Poet and author of The Seasons Bear Us

Saturday, 9am-noon

March 6

$70 Non-Members, 30% discount for all members ($49)

From Homer to the present, poets have responded to great works of art.  Poet Jeanie Thompson has taught poetry writing in the ekphrastic (art-derived) tradition to “poets” of all ages and experience levels, helping them find personas, voices, and stories that emerge from works of visual art.  In this three-hour workshop participants will explore the impulses of this tradition by reading examples of ekphrastic poems, working through writing exercises, and then exploring the Birmingham Museum of Art’s collection to find subjects for their own poems about paintings, photograph and sculpture. No prior writing experience necessary.

At the conclusion of the workshop, students will regroup for a critiquing session and then leave with poems in draft form. Students will have the opportunity to present their ekphrastic poetry in a public forum at the Artbreak on April 13 at noon.
