MyMuseum Latest Blog Post
By Ron Platt, Hugh Kaul Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art
MyMuseum is a blog inspired by the varied experiences of those who work at the Birmingham Museum of Art. In this one space, we want to share, from the many voices that make up the museum family, the ways the institution and the people behind it have touched us. Sometimes it will be about the art. Sometimes it will be about the people. Sometimes it will be about the events that educate and enlighten. It will always be told from the perspective of an individual and about their relationship with this institution.

Right now I’m looking ahead to 2011. I’m bringing in a couple of big shows next year, and trying to stay on top of that. I’m excited about them both. Darkroom opens in January; it’s an exhibition of 18 photographers and new media artists working in South Africa during the Apartheid era. Right now I’m working with our Education department to schedule events and activities during the run of the exhibition. I want to make sure we bring focus to the parallels between Apartheid in South Africa and Birmingham’s history of racial and social injustice. Tomorrow I’m meeting with staff members of the Civil Rights Institute to discuss some collaborative programming.
