As companionate marriage and stronger bonds within the nuclear family became more common in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, special jewelry celebrated the increased fervor in romantic and family love.

Miniatures and ornamental hairwork were worn in jewelry as memorials to the deceased or to commemorate a special occasion such as a wedding. This slide lecture will review the history of hairwork and portrait miniatures, including the eye miniatures featured in the exhibition The Look of Love, and will explore examples from Jane Austen’s life and works.
