The Birmingham Museum of Art will partner with the Birmingham Chinese Festival Association (BCFA) to provide an art activity at the 2009 Birmingham Chinese New Year Festival. Come make your own Chinese New Year greeting cards with the Museum to celebrate The Year of the Ox! Art, Gospel, and All That Jazz Sunday, February 1, 3pm
Feed your body and soul while celebrating diverse cultures and exploring spiritual connections represented in the Museum’s galleries.

HBO Def Poetry Jam artist Sharif Simmons hosts an evening of performances by local spoken word artists headlined by internationally renowned spoken word artist Patricia Smith. Smith is a four-time National Poetry Slam champion and an award-winning poet. Her most recent book, Blood Dazzler, was a 2008 National Book Award finalist.

2pm Begin with the topic tour A Symphony of Art from 18th Century to Contemporary led by docent Myrna Goldstein. (This Museum program is free and open to the public.)
3-5pm University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literature presents When East Meets West: Franco-Arabic Music, a progressive concert through the Museum’s galleries ending with reception featuring traditional Arabic and North African cuisine, pastries and Moorish coffee. March 2-29 Discover the artistic talent of Alabama youth and see firsthand the effect visual arts can have on an education. Each March, the Museum and art educators throughout the state organize this exhibition to encourage support for quality art education programs and to provide a forum for acknowledging skills that can only be fostered through a visual arts experience. |
