In this program for adults, held the second Saturday of each month, specially trained docents present the Museum’s collection by means of verbal descriptions, three-dimensional tactile models based on original works of art, and sculpture. Today’s ArtBreak is led by the BMA's Curator of American Art Graham Boettcher, Ph.D. Dr. Boettcher will discuss the artistic relationship between Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz's niece, Georgia Engelhard, nicknamed "Georgia minor" by the Stieglitz family. A formidable artist in her own right, Engelhard was given an exhibition by her famous uncle at the age of 10, and became a friend and protégée of Stieglitz's wife, Georgia O'Keeffe.

Art and Meditation

Learn to meditate and naturally grow your confidence, awareness, and compassion, while also learning about a different object from the Asian collection each week! With the growth of Japanese Buddhism from the eighth century onwards, meditative practices were brought to and further developed in Japan, and became very popular among the samurai. During the twelfth century, the samurai embraced Zen Buddhism and subsequently discovered the benefits of meditation, giving the samurai warrior the mental edge that his enemies found extremely challenging. Meditation instructors from the Shambala Center of Birmingham will lead the weekly sessions. Call 205.254.2571 for assistance and questions.

Feed your body and mind at noon every Tuesday. Join us for a 20-30 minute gallery talk. Stay for lunch at Oscar’s Café and they will throw in a free dessert! Today’s ArtBreak is led by Japanese sword specialist and collector Ray Deadman. Ray will lead a tour of the swords in our exhibition Lethal Beauty: Samurai Weapons and Armor. To attend this ArtBreak, you must purchase a ticket to Lethal Beauty. Tickets to the exhibition are FREE for BMA members and $10 for non-members.
