Guidelines for Drawing in the Museum Galleries

1. Students may use only pencils (as well as colored pencils) and paper.  Supplies may not be left unattended.

2. Distance regulations from works of art including paintings as well as free standing sculpture and pedestals:

a. When sketching on a pad of paper, the student must maintain a distance of at least three feet (3 ft.) from a work of art.

b. No paper is to be placed on a wall, pedestal or platform for support.

c. When making close observations, the student may approach up to one foot (1 ft.) away from a work of art without art materials.

3. Teachers and students must be aware of their positioning in the gallery.  It is a violation of building fire codes to block an entrance or exit to a gallery.  Teachers must not only be aware of the location of students, but supplies at all times.

4. Copying of artwork may be done from the Museum’s permanent collection only.  No copying may be done from works of art in a temporary exhibition or on loan.

5. The galleries are installed with the conservation of the artwork in mind.  No piece of art can be moved and no additional lighting may be brought into the galleries.

6. To schedule gallery space for your class call the Coordinator of Tours, Docents and School Services, 205-254-2318. Two-three week lead time is required.

7. The Coordinator of Tours, Docents and School Services will work with the teachers to determine the number of students who may work in a gallery and which artworks are appropriate.

8. Security may interrupt a class at any given time due to crowd situations or other security issues.
