Thank you to the Museum docents who gave 103 tours during the exhibition and to the 350 volunteers who greeted visitors and provided them with magnifying classes for closer study of the drawings. Daily school tours were scheduled for 7,326 elementary through college age students, many combining the experience with a tour in the Museum’s permanent galleries.
During an Art of Flight Family Day offered in conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum partnered with the Birmingham Zoo’s birds and their keepers, U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s flight staff, and City of Birmingham’s mounted police officers to help give a sense of the breadth of of Leonardo’s studies. Other community partners were the Southern Museum of Flight, who built one of Leonardo’s famous flying machines, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, who performed a concert of works by Italian composers such as Antonio Vivaldi.
The Museum is particularly grateful to our sponsors who made it possible to offer these great treasures to our visitors at no charge. Leonardo was presented by Regions. Additional support was provided by the Robert Lehman Foundation, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, EBSCO Industries Inc., the Members of the Birmingham Museum of Art, and the City of Birmingham. Friends of Leonardo were Mr. Henry S. Lynn, Mrs. Houston A. Brice, Mrs. Virginia G. Johnson, and Mr. and Mrs. James A. Livingston, Sr. The exhibition was made possible by the Foundation for Italian Art & Culture and is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
