The Birmingham Asian Art Society was founded in 1975 and plays an integral role in supporting the Asian Art Department through acquisitions, workshops and symposia, lectures, and exhibitions. The group meets formally twice a year for lectures by outstanding scholars. Sponsored by the Asian Art Society, these lectures are free and open to the public. The group also hosts an annual spring reception for members and invited guests. Throughout the year, an informal Study Group meets over lunch to discuss a topic concerning Asian art. Travel opportunities to Asia, as well as to local and national events involving Asian art, are also a part of this support group’s mission.
