By Haley Medved Kendrick, Teen Advisory Board* member, 2007
Few memories of my time in high school stand out as prominently as my experiences volunteering with the Birmingham Museum of Art. As a member of the Teen Advisory Board and a summer volunteer, I gained valuable experience not only with art but also more broadly with nonprofits and the Birmingham community. I believe that my experience volunteering in various communities within and around the city through the Museum’s programs began to grow my fledgling interests in the social sciences. Currently I am pursuing a PhD in Sociology at UAB, and the knowledge and experience I gained from volunteering with the BMA often assists my understanding of society, especially in the Birmingham area. I would encourage students from all disciplines to take advantage of opportunities available at the Museum; there are so many ways to get involved and so much to learn. Not to mention, it’s a ton of fun to make and enjoy art while you’re at it!
