She began her curatorial training at the University of Iowa Museum of Art, and held a graduate internship and later a Whitney Doctoral Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in between conducting periods of graduate fieldwork in West Africa.
She has organized a wide range of exhibitions on the arts of Africa, the African-Diaspora, and the Americas, including Rediscovery: Works from the Permanent Collection of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Symbols and Sayings: The Visual and Verbal Arts of the Akan, Transformed by Fire: African Ceramics and Iron Arts from the Mortimer B. and Sue Fuller Collection, Figuring the Feminine: Selected Work by African-American Women Artists, American Visions: African-American Art from 1960 to the Present, Stitching Beauty: Kuna Indian Textiles from Panama, Through the Looking Glass: Birmingham Celebrates Senegal, and Power and Purpose: African Art from the Congo.
Prior to joining the Birmingham Museum of Art staff in 2002, she taught art history at Spelman College and Georgia State University, where she served as faculty coordinator of the art history department. She also curated exhibitions for the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, The High Museum of Art, and the Georgia State University Gallery.
Her publications include journal articles, exhibition catalogs and essays, book and exhibition reviews, and teacher training manuals.
