Docents
Birmingham Museum of Art docents play a key role in fulfilling the Museum’s commitment to the community. Docents are trained to facilitate tours of Museum galleries that provide art experiences for visitors of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, especially children. About 80% of BMA tours are for children and students. Docents share their deep passion for art, culture and learning to help all museum visitors connect with objects and experience the magic of art.
We believe in the power of art and the power of people, and the magic that happens when both come together. The docent program will only achieve its full success if we all commit to participate and contribute to transforming our docent corps into a community of learners.
Our program will thrive if we all invest in the program, in each other and in the process of learning. If we can accept this commitment, the Museum will become an even better place, benefiting its public and its City.
The next docent training class will begin in late summer/early fall 2013. Check back next spring for more information about the application process, or click here to add your name to our mailing list and receive information automatically.

I've always loved the BMA. When I signed up to be a docent I thought it would be a great way to "give back" to the community and learn about art. I had no idea how much the experience would enrich and transform my life.
The docent training is amazing. The education department and curators are totally dedicated to making sure that docents have the information they need to confidently talk with visitors. The training has expanded my knowledge and appreciation of art. You can always count on training to be lively, relevant and fun!
Another wonderful part of being a docent is meeting new people. The docents are an unbelievably smart and talented group from many different backgrounds. Our shared passion for learning makes for strong connections. I have made many new and lifelong friends at the Museum.
The very best and most satisfying aspect of being a docent is connecting with visitors through art. There is no substitute for that "a-ha" moment when a student (or adult!) is personally moved by a piece of art. The positive energy is contagious and I leave the Museum on an "art high." All in all, being a docent is an immensely satisfying experience.
