This catalogue presents for the first time the entire European cast-iron collection at the Birmingham Museum of Art. It provides a complete inventory of the cast-iron collections of Gustav Lamprecht and Maurice Garbáty, which are comprised of objects dating from the first half of the nineteenth century from the Royal Prussian Iron Foundries (Gleiwitz, Berlin, and Sayn) as well private foundries in Berlin, Austria, and Bohemia.
An overview of the history of iron casting in Europe during the period and of the two collections is followed by the catalogue itself with 994 entries (508 medallions, medals, plaques, and gems; 486 sculptures, jewelry, and utilitarian objects such as candelabra, watch holders, sewing utensils, vases, bowls, and paperweights) with a detailed description of each object. Appendices include literary sources, a list of iron foundries and foundry marks.
